How does someone relocate across the country?

My fiance and I are currently living in Upstate New York and want to relocate to Florida's Tampa Bay area. He has already been applying to as many jobs he can online through Monster, HotJobs, etc. He has a final interview, after having 2 over the phone, with a company that he has to be there IN PERSON for, so we are going to have to fly or drive there just for that. We are on a very tight budget and we don't want to have to keep doing this for every job interview. Is there an easier way to relocate? Does anyone have any pointers? Should he try going through a staffing agency to find a job? How do we go about finding a house/apt. to rent before we get there? We are thinking of selling all of our things to save money by not renting a Uhaul and just replacing what we need over time. We have to save for the security deposit and the first & last month's rent on a house or an apartment. We've never done anything like this before and we could benefit from any helpful advice you wish to share.
