Do you think the church has played a significant role in men and women being single and childless over age 40?

No, I don't know of any reason to ume that. In addition, being single and childless over any age need not be sad, lonely, miserable, etc. Sometimes, in fact, being married and/or having kids can lead to one or more of those qualities.
